. i helped host one of the meetings were lindsey graham and john mccain made very clear their views on susan rice. the moderator cut the president's response and have those simultaneously been going on, susan rice would have deflected a lot of the attention from this hagel nomination. now other nominations, like john brennan, which is controversial in some quarters, and john kerry are getting less attention. i would like to comment on the gay rights. i was the only journalist who happened to have written about chuck hagel's views on gay issues years ago because i had conversations with him about my own views that at the time we were still pursuing translators working in intelligence agencies and the defense department and trying to purge them from military service. i had a discussion with him about that and about and don't ask, don't tell. they were attempting to sort out how you would sort through. hagel made clear his support for repealing don't ask, don't tell. i want to be clear that he is saying, and i don't think it is just a move that he has apologized to hormel, and hormel a

john mccain? >> well, i think john mccain and lindsey graham and a few others may say it. but listen, very important to go back to the debt ceiling debate, which we came to the edge of real financial crisis in this country. guess who was on jon stewart and stephen colbert in saying we're spending $120 billion in a country with $14 billion of gdp and it's not good for america. grover norquist. grover norquist was out educating conservatives that this afghanistan war was not in their interests from a financial perspective. forget the strategic questions. and from his work, i think, you really begin to see a quick collapse of conservative support. progressives and i think most independents already had a great deal of skepticism about afghanistan. but it has been these debt issues that have really driven a real collapse of interest and support for afghanistan. so anyone that comes and radically supports an ongoing troop presence in afghanistan is going to look very, very much out of the mainstream to use some of the comments lately that folks have tried to rile up about chuck hagel. >> l

that i think john mccain and others have carried is that if we draw down forces in afghanistan, we reduce our leverage with pakistan. i completely disagree. the more your forces are drawn down in afghanistan, the more leverage you actually have to shape the choices pakistan may make, but we're not going to dominate pakistan. it's going to be a constant relationship that's up and down, part seduction and just doing battle with one another, and pakistan's survivability as a nation is going to, in part, be dependent on itsibility to shape where the taliban goes because, of course, its internal issue is that the afghan taliban began to actually seed and grow in insurgency inside pakistan that they had to deal with, and i think that's fundamental. the troops on the ground don't necessarily help us solve that problem. other issues, money and other elements of state, will help us influence pakistan. >> what do we know about conversations between the karzai regime and the taliban, the negotiations in france? >> well, president karzai during our interview said that they are currently still in nego

is not the right word. we have familiar faces who are going to be involved in the immigration debate. senator john mccain from arizona, he disappeared from the issue a little bit so he could run for president. he's back. he's part of some of the negotiations that they're having. we also have senator jeff blake, the new senator from arizona, who has been involved on the issue for a long time. he actually sponsored a bill with a noted liberal, an immigration advocate, louis gutierrez, back when he was in the house. then we have new people. marco rubio, senator from florida, obviously a presidential hopeful, has been involved in the issue. a lot behalf he has to say is about the tone that republicans take. i don't think he's going to be involved in the nuts and bolts, because it's partly because of his presidential ambitions. but he's tried to come up with a middle-ground way, maybe not amnesty, but some sort of legalization, not citizenship. it's not clear how it would work. he speaks very eloquently about this. we'll have to see how that plays out. then there are new people. there's the senator fro
